US Forest Service Firefighters Fight Salt Chuck Wildfire

Ketchikan, Alaska

Dry, warm conditions in Southeast Alaska helped unattended campfires grow into a wildland fire near Revillagiggedo Island on Tuesday. A quarter-acre in size, the fire is currently on a half-acre sized island managed by the State of Alaska, near the head of George Inlet.

Eight Forest Service firefighters were on-scene Wednesday morning, and contained the fire at 1:00pm. A small crew will remain at the fire overnight to finish containment and monitoring activities on Thursday.

While summer conditions persist, Forest Service officials would like to remind all forest users to ensure all campfires are completely out before leaving a campsite or fire ring.
