US Forest Service Hiring For Wildfire Suppression and Fuels Management Positions

The U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region is now accepting applications for wildfire suppression and fuels management positions in 11 national forests located in Arizona and New Mexico.

According to the U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region, their fire and aviation management program is made up of talented individuals specializing in the following areas: dispatch, engine crews, fuels management, hand crews, helitack, interagency hotshot crews, and fire prevention.

The U.S. Forest Service Southwestern Region is using their new Fire Hire program for the application process.  Information for all open positions and application instructions can be found at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/fam/fire-hire/index.shtml.   Applications are due by August 16, 2010.

Below is the US Forest Service's Application Process Timeline:

July 1, 2010─Outreach begins.  Information is available on the Southwestern Region's website listing all vacant permanent fire vacancies and locations from the GS-0462-06 through 09 levels.

August 16, 2010─Application deadline.  Apply through AVUE Digital Services. Applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple locations, even if vacancies for certain locations are not listed as vacant, as vacancies may occur during the hiring process.

September 13-17, 2010─Application evaluation. Subject matter experts will evaluate applicants using a defined set of criteria.

September 20-24, 2010─Hiring. Representatives from each forest will make recommendations for hiring.  Applicants selected will be notified by a Forest Service representative by phone.  Applicants not selected will be notified by e-mail.

October 24, 2010─First effective date (excluding drug testing, transfer of station, and less than Permanent Full Time appointments).

Note: Interagency fire program management (IFPM) qualifications must be met by October 1, 2010.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
