Washington Department Make 8-Year-Old's Wish Come True
Eight-year-old Chase Swisher of Tumwater, Washington wants to be a firefighter, and yesterday the University Place Fire Department (UPFD) made his dream come true. Chase has been undergoing outpatient treatments at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma for brain cancer, according to the department. The hospital contacted the department requesting a fire station tour for Chase. According to the newspaper, the guild for the support staff along with the guilds for the volunteers and the firefighters donated money to get Chase special gear for him including turnouts and a helmet with his name on them, a uniform, and a pair of boots. Chase was sworn in as an honorary firefighter by the Fire Chief Mitch Sagers and given a badge. He was also welcomed into the firefighters union, University Place Local 2105, according to the News Tribune. Chase spent the rest of the day riding in the fire engine, spraying the fire hose and deck gun, trying out the equipment and having a fire house meal with the crew which included barbecue hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies, Jell-O (his favorite) and soda. While eating, he was asked him what his favorite part of the day was. "All of it," he said. "He's not going to stop talking about this for months," his mother Judy Swisher told the paper.
