Firefighters from Westside Fire House #2 in Vancouver will finish up their successful campaign to collect school supplies and basic needs for underprivileged children on August 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Hough Elementary School. The antique 1934 Seagrave fire engine, owned by the department, will be filled with donations and used for the delivery to kids.

This community collection of supplies was organized by Station Capt. Duane Schuman of the City of Vancouver Fire Department. On-duty firefighters will accompany him at the event to speak about the campaign and community support that made this drive such a success.

Many firefighters in the area had come to realize that children lack basic needs such as personal hygiene products, school supplies and clothing. Hough and Washington elementary schools were their main focus throughout this drive.

In recent years, Schuman stations have collected and redistributed thousands of coats and blankets to help needy families during the cold winter months.

Over half of the students at the two targeted schools qualify for free or reduced-price meals and high mobility rates are also reported which measure how many students transfer in and out of school during the school year, according to a City of Vancouver news release. It is believed that a significant number of students attending both schools are homeless. Lower scholastic achievement is the result of these circumstances.
