Ventura City Fire units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a two-story, multi-unit office complex occupied by  the Ventura County Health Department on May 10, 2011.

First responders arrived to find the building evacuated of all office and clinical personnel.  On the second-floor,  firefighters encountered an electrical burning odor.  No smoke or fire were present as was initially reported.  Assisted by facilities maintenance personnel, firefighters were able to locate and identify the source of the odor problem coming from a malfunctioning building ventilator on the roof of the facility.

As soon as the problem was identified, and some natural ventilation was completed to minimize the odor, workers were allowed to return to their workspaces.  A separate patient treatment facility and laboratory were temporarily evacuated, however  were not otherwise affected by the ventilator malfunction.
