Ventura County Fire Chiefs To Give Personal Assessments On Wildfire Risks
Camarillo, California Homeowners across the county will soon have the opportunity to communicate directly to their fire chief and learn whether their home is at risk from a wildfire. Tuesday, July 13, at the Poinsettia Pavillion from 6- 8 p.m., is when the first meeting will be held. Ventura City Fire Chief Kevin Rennie and Ventura County Fire Chief Bob Roper will attend the event to converse personally with residents and answer any questions they may have. Residents will have access to computer mapping programs in order to show the fire chiefs where they live and ask their opinion on the risk they face regarding wildfire. Instruction on the Ready, Set, Go! wildfire preparedness program will be given as well. Fire Chief Bob Roper states in a news release, "We teach our firefighters to constantly monitor their surroundings and fire conditions while they're fighting a wildfire. We call this situational awareness and it helps firefighters recognize dangerous conditions early, while there is still time to escape. We want to teach residents the same thing." At the meetings, not only will the chiefs discuss the upcoming fire season, but homeowners will learn when wildfires are burning in their area, how to prepare their families and homes to survive a wildfire, how to maintain their personal awareness during periods of intense fire weather, and also to recognize dangerous conditions around their homes and neighborhoods. A second meeting has been scheduled in Fillmore for Monday, July 19, and a third has been scheduled for the Conejo Valley on Monday, August 2. Meetings are also currently being planned for Ojai and Camarillo. When it becomes available, more information will be released on those meetings.
