The Novato Fire Foundation and the Novato Fire District announce that Whole Foods has been presented an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for their new Novato store. The easy-to-use life-saving machine automatically reads the electrical rhythm of the heart when a person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing. The AED will deliver electrical treatment to a victim whose heart has stopped. For these victims, electrical treatment needs to be applied as soon as possible to increase their chance of survival. Community demand for AED's is on the rise.

15 employees from Novato Whole Foods were certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR, and the use of an AED. The training is offered through the Novato Fire District along with a two year certification and a breathing barrier for all participants that pass the course.

The Novato Fire District began the AED Program under the Novato Fire Foundation's From the Heart program. The foundation and the AED program are supported by donations; no taxes are used for the AED program. A total of 85 AED's have been placed in public areas in the community. Foundation Board member and Fire District Board President Lj Silverman noted, "This demonstrates the partnerships between the community, the Fire Foundation and Fire District and Whole Foods. We're excited Whole Foods is committed to the community and we are here to support them to make their store the safest in the country." Foundation Executive Director, Forrest Craig noted, "We're looking for more sponsors to take on these life-saving machines and community donations to support this worthy cause."

If your business or public venue might be a candidate for an AED, please contact the Battalion Chief Ted Peterson at 878.2607.
