A wildfire that began Sunday afternoon in Herriman, Utah has scorched more than 3,500 acres and destroyed at least four homes. The Machine Gun Fire, which began at the Camp Williams machine gun range during a training exercise has forced the evacuation of at least 1,600 homes and closed seven schools.

At least 150 firefighters from all over the area as well as aerial support are working under the Unified Fire Authority. Utah Governor Gary Herbert activated 120 Utah National Guard members to help with the firefight.

Sunday night, the United States Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized funds to help fight the Machine Gun Fire. The Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) will make FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs.
