IAFF Succeeds in Easing Normal Retirement Age Regulations

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced April 18, 2012 that it has agreed to overhaul proposed regulations that would have created significant problems for many public sector pension plans. Under the original regulations, all public sector pension plans would have been required to specify a “Normal Retirement Age,” and would not have been allowed to define retirement based on years of service or a combination of age and years of service.

Tulsa Fire Department & Oklahoma Task Force 1 to Conduct Swift Water Training

The Tulsa Fire Department and Oklahoma Task Force 1 will be conducting Swift Water Rescue Training at Skiatook Lake Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week. The training will involve several of the “Rescue Boats” used by TFD and OKTF1 during actual swift water rescue incidents.

Crews have demolished the old TVF&R Elligsen Road Fire Station 56 to make way for TVF&R’s new South Operating Center. Built in 1979, this building was formerly the headquarters of the Tualatin Rural Fire District. While the location works great from a response perspective, the current facility has major structural and design deficiencies, is undersized for today’s staffing and equipment needs, and has no facilities for female firefighters.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano regretfully announced on Apr. 16, 2012 the death of Lt. Richard A. Nappi, Engine 237, a 17-year veteran of the FDNY who suffered an apparent heart attack while battling a three-alarm fire the same day in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Lt. Nappi, who lived in Suffolk County and leaves behind a wife and two children, was 47 years old.

City of Madison fire investigators believe the use of a heat gun to dry out damp wood in a bathroom led to a smoldering fire that cause an estimated $20,000 in damages at a multi-unit structure at 132 Lathrop on April 17th, 2012.
Arson Arrest in Tulsa Yields 30 Year Sentence

An arrest stemming from an incident on July 2nd, 2010 resulted in a 30 year sentence for Michael Duane Cypert on April 17th, 2012 as he pleaded ”No Contest” to a reduced charge of “2nd Degree Homicide”.

The Clark County Fire Department and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) continue to investigate a fire that destroyed the construction site of a planned Muslim cemetery and funeral home on Feb. 22, 2012.
