Oregon State Fire Marshal Sends Crews to Protect Homes from Elk Fire Conflagration

With at least 22 homes threatened by the Elk Fire burning four miles west of Madras, yesterday evening Governor Kitzhaber authorized the Oregon State Fire Marshal to implement the state's Conflagration Act.

Fire inspectors estimate roughly $950,000 in damages to six structures and a vinyl fence that were damaged in a brush fire on August 17, 2011.
US Forest Service Responds to Wildfire Near Big Bear, California

The US Forest Service received a call of smoke in the area of Forest Road 3N12 in the Holcomb Valley area north of Big Bear, and started a full wildland fire response which includes fire engines, hotshot crews, helicopters and retardant air tankers.
Fire Protection Research Foundation Receives Grant for Fire Service Research

The Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), was awarded $835,000 in a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from the Emergency Preparedness Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a new research project in support of the fire service.
