In 2010, 87 firefighters from 31 states lost their lives as the result of fatal injuries sustained on the job. Luckily, those numbers are decreasing as the average number of firefighter deaths between 2004 and 2009 was 112.

Firefighters suffered 71,875 injuries in the line of duty last year, an eight percent decrease from 2009 and a two-decade low, according to the new report (PDF, 400 KB) “U.S. Firefighter Injuries” issued by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

It is with deepest regret and sorrow that the IAFF reports the death of Captain William Caviness, a member of Greensboro, NC Local 947. Brother Caviness, 35, died suddenly today while running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on behalf of the IAFF Foundations Burn Fund Fitness Team.
Bells Across America Will Ring to Honor Fallen Firefighters
