The Burn Institute - Inland Empire is accepting nominations for their 5th annual Spirit of Courage Award honoring heroes from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Awards will be given out at their Spirit of Courage awards Banquet on June 20, 2009 at the Highland Springs Resort in Cherry Valley, CA.

Recently, twenty Southern California firefighters went on the auction block to raise money for the UC San Diego Burn Center. Sponsored by Fire Chief Ale, the 13th Annual Firefighter Auction to benefit the UCSD Burn Center, was held at the Rock Bottom Brewery in La Jolla, California.

The men and women of the Chicago Fire Department recently received a plaque, the "Bucks Award", in recognition of outstanding support of young burn survivors at the Bucks for Burn Camp.

The United States has been hit with it's share of large natural disasters over the past several months which include flooding in the Midwest, hurricanes that hit the Gulf states and most recently, firestorms in California. Stress caused by loss or traumatic experience, like a natural disaster can catch people off guard with emotions like grief, sadness, shock, anger, hopelessness and helplessness according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health and Survival Section is working to develop sample SOG's for fire departments in the event of a critical firefighter injury, and has designed a survey for critically injured firefighters.
