Jurors recommended that Raymond Lee Oyler be sentenced to death for the murder of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters during the Esperanza Wildfire that he was convicted of setting. Their announcement came at 3:00 p.m. PST today at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

The same jury which found Oyler guilty of setting numerous wildland fires in 2006, including the 40,000 acre Esperanza Fire that killed five U.S. Forest Service firefighters, has to decide whether to recommend death or life in prison.

Riverside County Judge W. Charles Morgan ruled today that Raymond Lee Oyler, who has been convicted with setting a wildfire that caused the deaths of five U.S. Forest Service firefighters in 2006, is mentally competent and that the penalty phase of his trial can continue.
