NFPA Receives Major Grant from FEMA for National Sprinkler Awareness Campaign

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) received a $746,438 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to conduct a national home fire sprinkler awareness campaign, “Faces of Fire,” which will demonstrate the true impact residential fires have on individuals and families, and encourage people to take action to prevent fire deaths in their communities by advocating for home fire sprinklers requirements for new construction.

More than 3,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives each year to fires and 84% of those who die do so in their home. While smoke alarms provide an early warning signal of smoke or fire, sprinklers installed in ceilings respond to fires while they are still small, controlling the spread of deadly heat, flames and toxic smoke, as well as saving valuable property.

While napping at his parent's Wallingford, Pennsylvania home last weekend, Justin Davidson, a career firefighter in Maryland was awakened by his parents screaming that the house was on fire. Despite orders by the local police to evacuate, Davidson fought back the flames until volunteers with the Garden City Fire Station arrived

Virginia Firefighter Killed in Motorcycle Accident

A James City County firefighter was killed Sunday night in a motorcycle accident. Just before 10:30 p.m., Chris Karban, 27, reportedly lost control of his motorcycle on Route 199 and ran off the road.
West Virginia County Adopts New Search & Rescue Program

Officials in Marshall County, West Virginia hope a program new to their area that aids search and rescue teams will also help save lives. Project Lifesaver, is an electronic system that uses radio transmitters and personal tracking equipment to help first responders hunt for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer's, Autism, Down's syndrome, dementia and other related disorders.
Former Fillmore Chief Sues Over Wrongful Termination

The former fire chief with the City of Fillmore, California has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city. Pete Egedi was dismissed in 2008 over allegations he misappropriated thousands of dollars when he was chief of the Fillmore Fire Department.
