Like many other agencies in the United States, the Fresno Fire Department faced budget cuts in 2009 and 2010 that impacted the amount of resources available to them. In response to this they implemented a new plan of action and training called "Tactics and Strategies for the New Deployment" which focuses on safely and effectively fighting fires with fewer resources. Since 2005, the National Firefighter Near-Miss Reporting System has offered firefighters a secure, non-punitive way to share information about incidents that may have resulted in an injury, fatality or property damage. Any incident that puts a firefighter at risk should be reported - large or small - so that others in the firefighting community can avoid making the same mistakes. Available to state, local and tribal governments, FEMA's Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) is federal financial assistance for the mitigation, management and control of fires on publicly or privately owned grasslands or forests. In the state of California, FMAG's are requested through the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA) by a local or state fire agency.
