5.2 million Southern Californians will participate in the Great Southern California ShakeOut, which is the largest earthquake drill in the United States and is based upon the simulation of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the San Andreas Fault. The region is overdue for a massive earthquake, as the San Andreas Fault typically has an earthquake of this size every 150 years, and it has been 300 years since the last one. The earthquake professionals, emergency responders, business leaders, and community activists who make up the Earthquake Country Alliance that organized and sponsored this drill aim to educate the public about the devastating effects of such a large earthquake and teach them how to prepare for this type of disaster.
