The Upland Fire Department's 1915 American La France Chemical Engine

Published: Monday, June 27, 2011

In 1915, the Upland Fire Department took delivery of its first motorized fire apparatus, an American La France Chemical Engine. After many years of service, the truck was sold to the City of Torrance in Southern California and then disappeared for decades until the widow of a fire truck collector recently contacted the City of Upland. The woman explained that her husband had purchased the vehicle several years before, he had recently died and she was looking to sell it. Through the efforts of many in the Upland Fire Department and city legislators, the truck has found its way home, is undergoing a ground-up restoration, and will ultimately be housed in the station it originally served. Join FDNNTV.com’s Bill Lorin for a look at this firefighting treasure.
