Fast Moving Las Vegas Grass Fire Damages Six Properties
Six properties were damaged in the Twin Lakes area (Ward 5) of Las Vegas early yesterday afternoon after a fast moving grass fire. No one was injured during the incident. Seven people have been displaced because of the fire. Firefighters were sent to the 1300 block of Silver Lake Drive (Vegas/Rancho) at 1:58 p.m. after an outside fire started a tree, a utility pole and two wood frame sheds on fire. Strong southwest winds pushed the flames northeast between two houses at 1305 and 1309 Purple Sage Avenue. The two single story wood frame houses caught fire and were damaged. Winds picked up some of the embers and blew them overhead and into a yard across the street where it caught a tree on fire and also a wood fence behind a property on Smoke Tree Avenue. Firefighters had all of the fires under control by 2:08 p.m. Damage was estimated at $60,000. Two sheds on Silver Lake Drive were damaged on the outside, the two homes, one which is vacant, were damaged on the outside wall, part of the roof and attic area. The occupants of the other house are displaced because of the fire, they refused assistance from the American Red Cross. A wooden fence and some other outside items were damaged at the remaining two properties. The cause of the fire is undetermined, fire investigators determined the fire started outside.
