Former Sugar Cane Land Burns in Hawaii

Former sugar cane land near Palani Place in Hanamā'ulu, Kaua'i, Hawaii was scorched by a brush fire Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the Kauai Fire Department.

Firefighters from the Līhu'e and Kapa'a stations along with rescue specialists and fire recruits responded to the 1:30 p.m. alarm and within a half hour, the fire was deemed under control.

Crews continued to put out hotspots until around 2:45 pm, according to the department.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.

During the dry season, fire officials are asking residents to be cautious.

Fire prevention tips offered by the Kaua'i Fire Department include:
  • Don't throw lighted cigarettes out of a car window.
  • Don't park your vehicle on dry grass.
  • Never leave campfires or backyard burning unattended.

A new partnership has been formed between the University of California San Diego, CAL FIRE, and San Diego County that is helping CAL FIRE/San Diego County FIre Authority to monitor the rural areas of San Diego, California for wildfires. The project, known as FireSite, is using webcams to show firefighters, Incident Commanders and dispatchers a real time, 360 degree view of areas that were previously difficult to view.
