Riverside, California National Fire Prevention Week was observed this year between October 5th and 11th. Fire Departments across the United States and Canada held open houses, expositions, and various training events aimed at educating citizens about fire safety topics. On Saturday, October 11th, the City of Riverside Fire Department, hosted the Riverside Fire Service Expo at their new training facility. According to Captain Mitch Wesche, approximately 500 citizens attended this year's expo. Event coordinator and Riverside Fire Department Public Education Specialist Samantha Neathery reported that this year's exposition was triple in size to last year's event. Displays and demonstrations included a mock MVA extrication, a car fire, and a rescue dog demonstration. Fire safety and prevention materials were available to families, with several items customized for children. Home Depot was also present at the event, providing children with free signature orange aprons and wood projects, including a fire truck model. The show piece of the event was RFD's new training facility. According to Captain Wesche, two of the buildings on the site are over 50 years old; however, a new state of the art building was just added to the center in 2008. This new building allows Riverside Firefighters and Explorers to train on a variety of emergency scenarios.
