Museum Celebrates Wildfire Awareness

MCMINNVILLE, Oregon

In honor of Wildfire Awareness Week, May 2-9, Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum will host Wildfire Awareness Day on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event includes presentations on safe fire practices and wildfire prevention; appearances by Smokey Bear; live demonstrations of fire fighting vehicles and campfire safety; children's crafts and activities; and informational booths about wildland firefighting, fire prevention and home defensibility.

Additional contributors to Wildfire Awareness Day include the Oregon Department of Forestry, United States Forest Service, Keep Oregon Green Association, Boy Scouts of America, the McMinnville Fire Department, the Oregon Burn Center, the National Smokejumpers Association, Evergreen Unmanned Systems, Evergreen Agricultural Enterprises and Supertanker Services, Inc.

Admission to the Aviation Museum on May 9 will allow visitors to participate in all Wildfire Awareness Day activities. The first 200 visitors will receive a free Fire -Resistant Plants for Home Landscapes brochure.

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is best known as the home of the world's largest wooden flying boat, the" Spruce Goose", SR-71 "Blackbird", the Titan II SLV Missile and the Grumman F6F-3 "Hellcat". In addition, there are more than 150 historic aircraft, spacecraft and exhibits on display, along with artwork, traveling displays, the Spruce Goose Café, the Cosmo Café, the Rotors, Wings & Things store, the Right Stuff Store and Oregon's largest IMAX® 3D theater. The hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., daily except when it is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter. The Museum facility is located at 500 NE Captain Michael King Smith Way, across the highway from the McMinnville Airport and about three miles southeast of McMinnville, Ore., on Highway 18. For the second year in a row, firefighters from the FDNY battled Ontario firefighters in a friendly game of Ice Hockey, appropriately titled “Fire on Ice”. The event was a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and drew thousands of spectators to the Citizen’s Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
