An idea that started more than eight years ago after two Los Angeles-based firefighters extinguished a brushfire is now not just a reality, it's giving back to the firefighting community.

Fireman's Brew, Inc. has developed a hero's brand of products that can be enjoyed both on and off-duty.

Fireman's Brew Beer Making Process

The off-duty products are three variety of beers that can "Extinguish you thirst and ignite the party." FDNNTV.com's Barbara Brooks recently took a tour of the brewery where the Brewmaster explains what a craft brew is.

"There are four basic ingredients to making beer. There's water, malt, hops and yeast," Brewmaster Rick Lovett says.

First the water and barley are combined to create a liquid called wort. "That sweet, liquid, barley wort is then transferred over into the kettle. We'll boil that for about 45 minutes and then we'll add the third component, hops to it. Then we'll whirlpool the whole batch, allow it to go through a rest for another hour and then it's ready to be moved or racked over into a fermenter," Lovett explains.

Once in the fermenter the final ingredient is added, yeast. The yeast consumes the sugars and the byproduct of that is carbon dioxide and alcohol.

Fireman's Brew Beer and Non-Alcoholic Beverages

There are three varieties of Fireman's Brew: Blonde, Brewnette and Redhead. Blonde was the first beer the company began brewing, and is a Pilsner style lager. The Brewnette is a dark German-style Dobblebock, and Redhead is a rich red ale.

"When we originally came up with the idea of Fireman's Brew, we had the beer and we thought, 'you know what, that's an off-duty drink'. So, we came up with the idea of having some on-duty drinks. So, we actually have coffee, and we have root beer, black cherry and cream soda," founder Rob Nowaczyk explains.

Nowaczyk wanted to make sure of one thing and that was to "brew the best beer possible, and at the same time let's raise money for the firefighters across the nation."

Supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

Now, 5% of the proceeds of everything they sell goes to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

"Our goal is to raise $1 million for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the more beer we can sell, the more money we can raise," Nowaczyk says.
