PowerFlare Review

The PowerFlare Safety Light was developed by a police officer, using the latest in LED technology, as a means of improving first responder safety. Since its introduction, the PowerFlare has been put to use by the law enforcement community, fire departments, EMS agencies, and scuba divers in a variety of applications.

The PowerFlare was initially designed to be used at traffic incidents as electronic road flares to help protect first responders.  The LED light is a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to incendiary road flares, with many government agencies expressing concern about the fire danger and pollution that come with traditional flares.

The PowerFlare can be placed directly on the ground or inside of a safety cone.  According to the PowerFlare website, the unit emits light in all directions and can be seen from miles away at night.  PowerFlare CEO Ken Dueker says that with many firefighters and police officers being killed in the line of duty during traffic related incidents, his company's product gives firefighters, EMS personnel and law enforcement agents an added measure of safety.

The PowerFlare also has other applications within the fire service.  The lights easily attach to a firefighter's gear using a standard carabiner, and can be used in incidents with low visibility to improve firefighter accountability.  According to Dueker, the PowerFlare can help RIT teams locate firefighters who have become incapacitated if the firefighter is wearing the safety light because of its brightness.  Firefighters can also use the light during team entries in environments with low visibility or high volumes of noise for accountability.  The unit features different light patterns which can be used to signify firefighters versus officers.

Firefighters can also use the PowerFlare in low visibility situations to create an illuminated path on the ground from an entrance to some point within the fire building, so that firefighters can more easily find their way back to safety.

According to Ken Dueker, the PowerFlare is very durable, saying,  "This is the most rugged light that is made right now, and it's made in the USA."  He explains that the unit is military-spec rated and has withstood many tests, including being run over by a fire truck.

The PowerFlare comes in a rechargeable version and a non-rechargeable version.  The company sells a rechargeable kit of six that can plug into a vehicle's cigarette lighter or can be directly hard-wired into the vehicle.  The non-rechargeable PowerFlare is long lasting and uses CR123 lithium batteries.

The PowerFlare Safety Light retails for $50.00 each, or it can be purchased in a rechargeable kit of six for approximately $500.00.  The company also provides agencies with fleet pricing upon request.  Several fire departments are using the Power Flare, including Menlo Park Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department.
