Wash Fire On Tusayan Ranger District In Arizona

Tusayan, Arizona

A new fire was detected on the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest, July 22 by the Red Butte Lookout. The lightning-caused fire is progressing slowly 15 miles southeast of Tusayan. It has grown to a little over one acre.

Light rain fell and cloud cover stayed in place over the Wash Fire Friday afternoon. Fire behavior is expected to remain low under the current weather pattern.

Fire officials have identified an approximate 2,700 acre area where the fire will be managed for resource objectives. The east side of the management area is bordered by the 2009 Anderson Fire which will help crews maintain fire spread within the boundary set for the incident. Some of the objectives managers are working to achieve on this fire are: maintaining fire as a natural disturbance in the ecosystem, reducing hazardous fuels, and increasing plant diversity.

About 20 personnel are assigned to the incident monitoring fire activity, scouting for fire sensitive sites, and preparing range fences and the Arizona Trail for potential fire spread.
